Who's a Sakerette

By Angeline Asobo, Class of 1981

She is the one who as a preteen, fragile and scared, endured the intimidating and daunting first days in an all girls Baptist Secondary School on the hills of a town formally known as Victoria.

She is the one who withstood the rigors of foxhood from the naive to the experienced. Ah! the ritual of 'Cutting Tail' that marked the end of foxhood!! Later on banned, cutting tail took on another form... verbal tongue lashing. 'rude fox, experienced fox, piree, graffi, bami, mojili, nyangi, oversabi, Ibo, corn chaff, and the list goes on! Yet she endured and kept going

She is the one who had to study hard, be a good christian girl, respect her 'dulongs' and anyone more than two classes ahead of her!! ...and don't forget to append the title of 'Sister' or face the music!

Ah, The Queen's English only..... so what's a kid to do having just having arrived from the valleys of Njinikejom? Sister the water was not commotting plenty plenty..... when asked by a 'Sister' why it took so long to fetch bath water. Yet by graduation day, she had endured and could speak fluent English.

She is the one who experienced the power drunkenness of the infamous 'Handover' episodes..... especially the ones dubbed as 'rude foxes'. Yes their names were permanently imprinted on every 'punishment' list. Yet they endured!

She is the one who was picked on for no other reason but for her so called 'affluent' background. She was the one who was picked on for having been to 'Mbenge'. She was the one who was picked on for just being different. Still she endured.

She valued her House/Dorm Affiliation - be it Armstrong House, King House or Witt House. She may have started out in King House and ended up in Witt House. No matter where she was, she still smelled the perfume from the 'Annexes'. She did prefer King House though, because one got the first wave of sea breeze. She kind of envied Armstrong House girls because they were always winning the inter-house competitions!! Witt House was good for 'jarrying after lights out'

She endured early wake ups, the cold water wash, dress up, cleaning, inspection, devotion, breakfast and the trek up the hill to class with clock like precision. Chemistry, Physics, Domestic Science, Maths, English, French, Religious Studies, Geography, English Literature, Cookery, Domestic Science, Biology, Anatomy, needlework.

She did endure the trek to and from church on Sunday and don't forget morning and evening devotion.

She handled the trials and tribulations of being a Prefect.... Class Prefect, Senior Prefect, Dorm Head, Music Prefect, Social Prefect, Food Prefect, Library Prefect, Religious Prefect, Plots Prefect? Floor Member, etc etc! You wonder how come she became so assertive and self assured?

She endured peer pressure, raging hormones and the rebellious years. Yes she endured these and many more. She was ready to go into the world or was she???

She endured the transition into the real world. She went on to higher education. She went into parenthood. She went into both parenthood and higher education. She got a job. She chilled for a little while. Whatever she did she kept on going and enduring every obstacle that fell in her path. Maybe she has obtained the highest academic credentials, maybe she has not. Maybe she is a proud mother and/or grandmother. Maybe she has no plans for parenthood. Maybe she is a wife or a girlfriend. Maybe she is a CEO, Maybe she is just going through the motions. Wherever her stars have led her, she is still enduring and will make it through. She has a reputation to uphold...

After all of these years since graduating from Saker, her affection for Saker is still very strong. Her lifelong friendships were moulded there. She learned how to braid there (her daughter(s), family & friends are benefiting plenty). She learned about the Akoosoomboo (watch the pronounciation) dam. She also learned that "The Law is no respecter of persons"!!! and in the blessed memory of Pa Haddy, 'What is worth doing at all, it worth doing well"

Finally, I will like to say that no matter what our individual good and bad experiences were, Saker has produced some of the most stunning, controversial, intelligent, assertive, well rounded and grounded women on planet earth.

She is the Sakerette. Outstanding Sakerette I reckon.
Long Live Sakerettes!! Outstanding Sakerettes, notwithstanding!!
