WALK FOR THE CAUSE

ExSSA-USA members in the Washington, DC metro area participate in the Avon 2-day breast cancer and the Susan B. Komen 5K walk every year.

BRIDGING THE GAP - An Act of Love

In November 2006, ExSSA-USA members in Georgia and the Atlanta community reunited our African American/Cameroonian Sister - WSB TV Anchor woman- Monica Pearson into the Cameroonian community. Monica Pearson traced her ancestral DNA to the Bamileke tribe in Cameroon and was welcomed into our community in a festive ceremony showcasing Cameroonian cuisine. The event was supported by several Cameroonian cultural organizations and attended by many of our African American brothers and sisters living in Metro Atlanta.

ExSSA-USA members in, Georgia also organized a round table discussion to examine the contributions that African immigrant women are making in the USA and in their countries of origin. This discussion featured Julie Ndjee (CEO of Ultimate Seasonings), Melissa Nambangi (Executive Director of Minnesota African Women's Association), Mfon Ufot (former President of the Nigerian Women Association of Georgia) and Derek Kayongo (CARE, USA) among many others.

INVESTING IN OUR YOUTH

ExSSA-USA members in Georgia in collaboration with other members of their community are currently developing a youth mentoring program called CAMELA - Cameroonian Emerging Leaders Association. CAMELA is a network for emerging young leaders (7-25yrs old) in the Cameroonian community living in Atlanta, GA, with three main goals:
  • To implement programs that would build leadership qualities in the Cameroonian youth in Atlanta, GA
  • To strengthen the desire and interest of the Cameroonian youth in the history and culture of Cameroon
  • To celebrate and recognize the accomplishments and achievements of the Cameroonian youth in Atlanta, GA

BONE MARROW DONOR DRIVE

In 2006, EXSA-USA members in Los Angeles organized a bone marrow donor drive. During the drive they educated the community on the disease "Leukemia" and how ordinary people could participate in saving lives by becoming bone marrow donors. They also raised funds to support a young lady battling the disease in the Greater Los Angeles area, and registered a number of event attendees as bone marrow donors.
