Saker: The Early DaysSaker Baptist College, Victoria opened its doors on Monday, January 29, 1962 at 4 p.m. with 36 girls on roll. Corn chaff was the only food item on the menu that evening. The lone dormitory was a small house with 4 bedrooms and 12 bunk beds covered with bed bugs. Water was fetched down-hill from the Likomba stream and was used for bathing and washing clothes. The bathroom was built by the girls themselves with palm fronds while their beds were made of planks and benches. Some girls slept on benches while others slept on empty bunk-beds with mats. Mattresses were prohibited. A room in the staff quarters was used as a classroom. Desks were small studs which children in the nearby Cameroon Baptist Convention (CBC) primary school had used. Consequently, sitting and writing was uncomfortable as the girls were bigger than the benches. The first staff members were: Miss Berneice Westerman as the Principal, Miss Irene Martin as the House Mother, Miss Lydie Ngo Be-mai as the French teacher, Mr. Njenku (the sole male teacher) and Mr. & Mrs Henderson (North American Baptist missionary couple). The first cooks were Mr. Andrew, Mr. François and Mr. Sam. The first workman was Mr. Baurer. The first senior prefect was Dorah Ekiko. On opening day, the institution had not adopted a uniform for the students to wear. A uniform was later adopted which was made of yellow cloth with a band at the waist and gathered around the waist and neck. When the school started in 1962, school fees for attending Saker was £ 5210 shilling, which when converted to CFA francs amounted to 36,000 frs. Exercise books with inscriptions of C.B.C. on each of them were supplied by the school. In 1962 and 1963, the first two batches of students helped to carry all of the blocks used in building the refectory (dining room), library and administration block. These tasks were done as punishment for any crime committed on campus. The pioneer class of Saker Baptist College (see list below) graduated in 1966.
